Perfect Lovers (Viagra, Couple), Pharmaceutical Promotional Clocks, 10” x 24” x 1.5” installed, 2010
The "Perfect Lovers" series is an homage to the Felix Gonzalez-Torres piece (to me, a defining work of sculpture in the past quarter century) as well as simultaneously a playful and critical updating of it. In the plethora of pharmaceutical options available at present, many drugs can adjust our sense of time, either through slowing down, speeding up, stabilizing, or destabilizing. Similarly, many drugs alter or effect our sexuality through direct action or side effects, to enhance or repress sexual abilities. The simple complexity of a series of clocks on the wall can in some ways serve as a perfect model for a human figure today. Different combinations of clocks suggest different combinations of individuals, beyond pairings of different or same sex couples, into multiples, singles, and couples based on not just sex difference but chemical difference or sameness. As in Gonzalez-Torres’s original piece, the politics are both subtle and very direct at the same time.
